System Shock 2

System Shock 2 (1999) is a landmark that blended first-person shooting, RPG progression and survival horror aboard a doomed starship, the Von Braun. Developed by Irrational Games together with Looking Glass Studios and published by Electronic Arts, it dropped you into a nightmare of mutated crew and rogue cyborgs, guided (and manipulated) by voices over the radio in a story that delivered one of gaming's most celebrated twists.

Its brilliance lay in fusing systems that rarely coexisted then: you leveled up skills, hacked security, managed scarce ammunition and jury-rigged decaying weapons, all while an oppressive atmosphere of dread pressed in. The returning antagonist SHODAN remains one of the medium's great villains, her fractured, sneering voice turning exposition into genuine menace. Choices about how to build your character meaningfully changed how you survived.

Commercially it underperformed, but its DNA is everywhere: it's the direct forerunner of BioShock and a foundational text for the entire immersive-sim tradition. Played today with community patches it still unsettles, thanks to design and writing that prioritized tension and player agency over spectacle. Clunky in spots by modern standards, it remains essential for anyone interested in how shooters learned to think, and to scare.
