Tetris

Tetris is one of the purest and most influential games ever made. It was created in 1985 by Alexey Pajitnov, a researcher at the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Moscow, who built it in his spare time inspired by a set of pentomino puzzle pieces. What emerged was deceptively simple: seven shapes made of four blocks each — the famous tetrominoes — fall one at a time into a well, and you rotate and slide them to form complete horizontal lines, which then vanish. Miss too often and the stack rises until it reaches the top.

The brilliance lies in the escalating tension. As you clear lines the pieces fall faster, forcing quicker decisions until your careful planning collapses into frantic reaction. There is no ending to win, only your own limits to push against, and that endless, self-driven challenge is exactly why it became a global phenomenon. This DOS version brought Pajitnov's design to PCs, though the game's tangled ownership and licensing saga — spanning the Soviet state, Western publishers and Nintendo — is a legend in its own right.

Four decades on, Tetris has lost none of its grip. Its rules can be learned in seconds yet mastered over a lifetime, and it remains the definition of a timeless game — proof that elegance, not spectacle, is what truly endures.
