Domino Man

Arcade cabinets in 1983 mostly ran on shooting or on fleeing from pursuers. Domino Man from Bally Midway had a premise that fits neither: you set up rows of dominoes and try to protect them from everything that wants to knock them over. The design came out of Marvin Glass and Associates, a firm better known for developing toys and board games than video games, and the idea shows that origin clearly.

The principle is simple and unusual at once. Your character walks across the screen laying tiles behind them, while figures and objects move through the scene and will topple the row if you fail to get out of the way in time. So the challenge is not speed but route planning and judging when a longer stretch is worth the risk. The payoff for a completed row is the cascade of falling dominoes, which in 1983 was a spectacle a cabinet could genuinely sell itself on.

Games like this were rare on an arcade floor. Most designs of the period leaned on proven formulas, and experiments tended to come from companies outside the games industry. That is what keeps Domino Man interesting: proof that a calmer, constructive idea could hold its own next to shooters. Bally Midway was among the largest American cabinet manufacturers, publishing licensed Japanese titles alongside its own designs. Domino Man never reached the standing of the more famous machines from the same company, but it survives as a reminder that in 1983 ideas outside the mainstream were still being tried.
