Big Bird sprawls across the screen like a flat puzzle nobody really wanted to solve. You play Big Bird, the character from Sesame Street, and your task is simple: collect things. Nothing more, nothing less. Atari 2600 brought this game around 1983, when it was still believed that a famous TV name would sell anything.
In practice, this means moving across the screen toward objects that give you points. No time limit, no enemies, nothing that puts up any resistance. Gameplay? That word doesn't even belong here. You walk and collect, walk and collect. When you've collected enough, you move on. The screen changes, the colors stay the same, the mechanics stay the same.
What Big Bird did differently was minimal. The game had no ambition to be action, puzzle, or strategy. It was more of a brand application in pixels. The graphics withstand time through sheer simplicity — it's not particularly ugly anymore, just desperately empty. Sound? That exists somewhere between the game and silence, something between music and noise.
Fifty years later, you'll load it in your browser out of nostalgia or morbid curiosity. It's not about actually playing it, it's about understanding how different things were when educational licenses were trusted without question. Today's educational games are masterpieces compared to this, even if they sometimes do plenty of damage themselves.
Big Bird isn't bad, just absolutely hollow. No drama on screen, no challenge, no reason to come back. But that's exactly what makes it an artifact: proof that in the eighties, the words Sesame Street were enough and people already believed they were playing a game.
