Verso is one of those titles you stumble upon in an archive and immediately wonder what it even is. Nobody praises it, there are no articles about it, its existence passed almost unnoticed. From 1986, for DOS, with no clear genre in the listing — that's exactly how it looks.

It's a logic game with puzzle elements. Colored pieces appear on screen, which you manipulate in a grid. The goal sounds simple: match, eliminate, progress through levels. There's no story, no ambitions, just an attempt to put together something that would work as a game on PC. It reminds you of similar attempts from the same era — simple, programmatically modest, made for those who'd buy or download a game more out of curiosity than for entertainment budget reasons.

Controls are basically simple: cursor keys, confirm button. Graphics are bare, with no attempt at style. Sound is minimal or better left unmentioned. Playing has that strange quality — it's neither fun nor frustrating, more like your brain is smoking with the question of why anyone would run this today instead of, say, Tetris. Levels progress, difficulty increases, but you don't lack the feeling that you're seeing the barrier of things that tried to be games and didn't have what it takes.

Verso belongs to the category of games that were made because DOS existed and there was a person with a memory chip and spare time. There's no genius in it, no trick that says: here the creator had a vision. It's an attempt that somehow got made and stayed in archives as proof that in the eighties, everything possible and sometimes impossible was created.

Today you can play it in your browser as a curiosity. It's not a game that will change you, more pure collecting. If you want to understand what part of microcomputer history looked like, where things were created without the result meant to be a hit or a flop — this is a reminder.
