UFO Invasion

When your computer freezes mid-firefight and you're promising that old CPU an upgrade, you know you've just played UFO Invasion. This 1997 shooter presents itself as a straightforward arcade shoot-em-up where you defend Earth's surface from waves of alien invaders. Nothing fancy — you shoot up, they fall down.

UFO Invasion is arcade through and through. You control a small battery cannon at the bottom of the screen, move left and right, and blast away at the hovering enemy. Waves gradually speed up, special ammo and power-ups rain down between barrages. Simple formula — the same one that powered Galaxian, the same one that kept Space Invaders alive. Stretched arcade DNA with zero attempt to evolve it.

But that's where the trouble starts. The graphics are painfully flat and monotonous, the same pixels in a copy-paste green tone, the music (when it exists) sounds like an emergency exit alarm, and the hitboxes behave like the devs forgot they were supposed to exist. Shooting takes forever, enemies aren't unpredictable, they're just slow — not elegantly slow like the old classics, but frustratingly slow. The game looks and plays like someone knocked it out over lunch and shipped it immediately. No punch, no ideas, no style.

It's aged terribly. This game wasn't even interesting back in the '90s — it arrived when space shooters like this had already stopped being made because it promised nothing new. It's like buying a Pong remake in 1997. It lacks purpose, momentum, any reason you'd remember this one over a hundred others.

Today? Only if you want to see what a soulless arcade knock-off looks like. It's not bad in a "old things suck" way. It's bad because the '80s already had versions that did the same thing better. UFO Invasion is like playing someone else's homework, handed in late.
