Fallout 1 Prototype

A floppy disk lands in my lap with something that should be the first Fallout, but it's definitely not the game I know. Prototype — that word on the cover didn't mislead at all. What I was running in DOS was a raw skeleton that barely understands what it wants to be.

Fallout 1 Prototype is interesting for that reason: it shows how far the game was from the final 1997 release. It's a first-person RPG in a post-apocalyptic world full of artifacts and mutants. You're aiming at exiled city eyes or something equally bleak. The graphics are more primitive than the released version, the UI plays coy. It's not clear at all what does what. The world tells its story more through silence than dialogue.

Playing is frustrating until you come to terms with the fact that this is a lab experiment, not a finished game. The controls struggle with perspective. Shooting at enemies requires some trial-and-error to understand what distances and angles work. Character animations are stiff. Sounds exist, but more as a reminder that they should. Combat runs in turns, which is correct, but visual feedback is missing — sometimes it's unclear whether you hit or missed.

This is valuable mainly for the archivist and the original Fallout fan. You see in it how evolution went from the kitchen to its final form. Fair warning: the original Fallout is more playable even after a quarter-century. The prototype is more proof that there were dead ends along the way and that the final game was truly the better choice.

If you want to see how the nineties grew, and aren't afraid to dig into the raw bits of Czech development, it's a curiosity. For everyone else: play the released Fallout 1 and enjoy it where the prototype fails. This isn't about fun, it's about history.
