Charlie the Duck

If you could play it with the sound off, no one would know you were controlling a duck. Charlie the Duck is a platformer from the mid-nineties that borrowed a story from some old book or comics and had ambitions. What ended up happening was more of a failed experiment.

You're a duck named Charlie who must navigate through several levels full of traps, springs, and enemies. Nothing groundbreaking — a classic DOS side-scrolling platformer where your task is to reach the goal, collect some items, and not fall down. The graphics are simple, colorful, and a bit stiff in places. The sounds will haunt you even after you quit.

It plays awkwardly without being difficult. The controls aren't intuitive — jumping and movement feel like they're on different wavelengths, and to overcome obstacles, you need to find the precise timing. Not because the game is well-designed, but because it simply behaves unexpectedly. The physics are shaky. Charlie's animations are basic, and when you watch how the duck moves, you'll realize nobody here bothered to check how ducks actually move — which would be a shame if the game were trying for any personality at all.

Charlie the Duck belongs to that category of games that were supposed to be fun for kids and maybe were for a while, but today you look at them from the merciful distance of time. It doesn't do anything particularly wrong, but it won't wow you either. It's standard DOS fare — a game someone programmed because they could, and which survives today as a curiosity.

Playing it is only worth your time if you enjoy archival exploration of early platformers or want to see what computer software looked like twenty-eight years ago. You'll find it easily in a browser, and if you're in the mood for a few minutes of routine jumping without major surprises, Charlie won't disappoint. But you're not in it for the experience — you're in it for a snapshot of an era.
