Castle Master

Castle Master was one of the last great showcases for Incentive Software's Freescape engine, the pioneering technology that rendered fully three-dimensional, walk-around environments on hardware most people assumed could barely manage flat sprites. Released in 1990 and published by Domark, it dropped you outside Castle Eternity with a simple but effective hook: your twin sibling has been captured, and you must venture inside to free their trapped spirit while gathering the keys and objects needed to reach the dungeons below.

What made it remarkable at the time was the sense of genuine architecture. You could look up at towers, cross courtyards, climb stairways and peer through doorways, all in solid filled polygons that turned and tilted as you moved. It was slow and blocky by later standards, but the illusion of actually inhabiting a place was something almost no other game offered in 1990.

The catch, as with all Freescape titles, is patience. Movement is deliberate, hostile spirits drain your energy on contact, and progress depends on careful exploration and puzzle-solving rather than reflexes. Played today it feels more like a fascinating historical artifact than a thrill ride, but for anyone interested in the roots of first-person 3D gaming it remains genuinely instructive — a clear ancestor of the immersive worlds that would arrive later in the decade.
