A periscope eyepiece, a gun trigger on the joystick, and an endless blue expanse stretching before you. Seawolf is a submarine simulator from the early eighties that takes its job seriously — and expects the same from you.

Seawolf – screenshot 1

You're sitting in a submarine cabin, watching the radar. Enemy ships are sailing somewhere out there, but you only see them as dots on the screen. Your objective is simple: find them, lock on, and send torpedoes their way. The game unfolds in first-person — a periscope view and instrument panel elements you must read and operate. There's no arcade button-mashing here; you calculate angles, weigh distances, wait for the right moment.

The controls are unforgiving. Joystick, a few keys, and you have to piece together what's happening around you when you only see fragments of information. The submarine moves slowly, torpedoes chart their own course. A hit isn't a matter of seconds — it's a matter of calculation. When something unexpected happens, you have time to think. It makes the game feel tense rather than fun, more of a study than a game in the classical sense. The graphics are a skeleton of monochrome lines and numbers, but that very asceticism makes playing it hypnotic.

Seawolf was an experiment. In an era when arcade games devoured coins and crammed action into every second, this story asks: what if we gave the player time and darkness? It's neither accessible nor easy, but that's where the magic lies. The game hasn't aged poorly — it simply didn't change with time, because time never quite caught up with it that way.

Today, when you fire it up in an emulator, you feel like a skipper at the controls of a serious simulation. It's not a game for a quick session — it's a game for an evening when your head's in the right place. If you're curious about how a different branch of the computer entertainment industry might have evolved, Seawolf is instructive.
