About the game

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee, released in 1997, introduced one of the most memorable and unlikely heroes of the late 90s: Abe, a hapless floor-waxer at Rupture Farms who discovers that his species, the Mudokons, are next on the menu. What began as a cheerful meat-packing operation is revealed as slavery and slaughter, and Abe's escape becomes a mission to free his fellow workers, one nervous step at a time.

It is a cinematic puzzle-platformer built around cause and effect rather than combat. Abe is fragile and largely unarmed; survival means running, hiding, timing jumps and pulling levers, while the game's clever 'GameSpeak' system lets you issue spoken commands to guide other Mudokons past traps and guards to safety. Possessing enemy Sligs to turn their own guns against them is a highlight, and the density of hidden secrets rewards thorough exploration.

The atmosphere is what really lingers: gloomy industrial vistas, dark humour, and a surprisingly pointed message about exploitation lurking under the cartoon surface. It is also famously demanding, with instant deaths and trial-and-error passages that can frustrate. But its distinctive art, personality and inventive design made it a standout on both PC and PlayStation, and it holds up as a genuinely original piece of design.
