About the game

Everyone knows Monopoly, the property-trading board game that has ended more friendships than almost any other tabletop title. This 1996 Infogrames adaptation brought the familiar circuit of Boardwalk, railroads and Chance cards to the PC, letting you buy, build and bankrupt without ever having to argue over who gets to be the top hat or who was skimming from the bank. The core is exactly the rulebook you remember: roll the dice, circle the board, snap up a colour set, plaster it with houses and hotels, and squeeze rent out of anyone unlucky enough to land there.

The main appeal of a computer version is convenience. The machine handles the tedious bits everyone hates in the physical game, counting money, managing the deck, enforcing the rules, and it gives you AI opponents so you can play a full session solo. That also cures Monopoly's biggest real-world flaw, the way a single game can drag on for hours, since you can set things up and grind through turns at your own pace. As a faithful reproduction of the classic it does its job; whether you find it fun still depends entirely on whether you enjoy the ruthless bankruptcy simulator underneath. It has aged exactly as well as the board game itself, which is to say it is timeless and infuriating in equal measure.
