Alien Odyssey will take you by the hand and lead you into a story that accumulated by the hundreds throughout the entire nineties era — escaping from a space ship full of aliens. The game never introduced itself to the public with a grand gesture, remaining among those nameless DOS curiosities that got buried in school computers and dusty game shops. It was there, it was forgotten, and now we're digging it out of the archive. It's a sort of hybrid affair — an adventure with action sequences and puzzle-solving that isn't primarily about combat. The character flees through the ship's corridors, searching for a path to escape pods or whatever the game demands, avoiding or confronting aliens. It's not a pure action game, more something between point-and-click logic and arcade survival. The atmosphere is decent — dark rooms, sounds you can't quite place, the dread of something with claws waiting around the corner. The actual gameplay, however, is quite pragmatic. You learn the controls quickly because there simply aren't many options — movement, interaction, maybe some shooting. The animations look more like skeletons than character movement, dialogue is delivered in text, and the pace is rather slow. It's not a game that will drain you of adrenaline. Rather, it's a game that shuffles forward slowly. Some of the target and obstacle solutions are fairly transparent, others will just irritate you with their terrible geometry and sluggish collision detection. Alien Odyssey represents exactly what was expected from lower-budget nineties productions — a solid effort without grand ambitions. It wasn't a mega-hit, nor was it an interesting breakthrough. It was simply how games were made back then — try out a theme, rely on already familiar mechanics, and hope it somehow sells. Today it serves as historical testimony to an era when computers were fairly slow and creators had to figure things out themselves. If you want to experience retro sci-fi action without major heart-pounding moments, Alien Odyssey will fit into your afternoon. It's neither bad nor great — it's a quiet witness to the time when game makers were spinning their wheels more out of boredom and curiosity about what was possible at all. It plays in your browser without issues, which means you can look at it like a museum exhibit. Nothing more, nothing less.
