Smagly 2

Smagly 2, released in 1996 by the group Crystal Dream, was written for the ZX Spectrum. That fact alone is worth pausing on: the Spectrum launched in 1982 and was commercially dead in western Europe by the mid-nineties, yet it lived on across the former Soviet Union thanks to widely produced clone machines.

The Ukrainian and Russian Spectrum scenes consequently kept turning out games, demos and magazines through the nineties, at a point when everywhere else had long since moved to sixteen-bit computers and consoles. These late titles frequently show better graphics and smarter programming than games from the early eighties, because their authors had a decade of accumulated experience with the same hardware and knew precisely how to work around its attribute colour clash and single-channel beeper.

Smagly 2 is catalogued as a single-player arcade game. The numeral means an earlier instalment existed, and it belongs to the class of software made by small groups and circulated through the scene on tapes and disks rather than sold in shops.
