Over Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is een van de kroonjuwelen uit de avonturencatalogus van LucasArts, uitgebracht in 1992 en gebouwd op dezelfde SCUMM-engine die ook Monkey Island aandreef. In plaats van een film te bewerken, schreef LucasArts een origineel Indy-verhaal, en het is met gemak goed genoeg om een vierde film te zijn geweest: Indiana en de scherpzinnige, capabele Sophia Hapgood racen tegen een nazi-occulte divisie om de geheimen van de verloren stad Atlantis te ontrafelen, waarbij ze de hele wereld over springen van New York tot de Middellandse Zee.

Wat het spel bijzonder maakt, is de vertakkende structuur. Al vroeg kies je in feite een van drie paden: het Wits-pad dat de nadruk legt op dialoog en puzzels, het Fists-pad dat leunt op vuistgevechten, en het Team-pad waar Sophia met je meereist. Elke route herschikt locaties en oplossingen, wat het spel een echte herspeelwaarde geeft die zeldzaam was voor het genre. Het schrijfwerk is geestig, de puzzels zijn logisch volgens de befaamd eerlijke maatstaven van LucasArts, en de point-and-click-interface is soepel en vergevingsgezind, zonder doodlopende wegen of onwinbare situaties.

Het houdt opmerkelijk goed stand. De handgeschilderde VGA-achtergronden zijn prachtig, het tempo is vlot, en het wereldreizende avontuur vangt de geest van de films beter dan de meeste gelicentieerde titels ooit voor elkaar kregen. Voor veel fans staat het naast Monkey Island en Day of the Tentacle als een van de beste avonturen die LucasArts ooit heeft gemaakt.
