A cosmic shooting gallery without excuses. Nebula Fighter from 1997 is a straightforward vertical shoot-em-up that doesn't take itself seriously and doesn't lie about what it is. You fire it up, someone wants to take you out somewhere in an unknown galaxy, you've got a laser and the will to survive. Nothing else is expected.

You fly upward, enemies fall downward, you shoot. The game logic is as ancient as 1950s space exploration. Waves of enemies alternate with bosses, and occasionally you grab a power-up that triples your firepower. There's no story here, no motivation — just a quiet agreement between you and the game: you survive and advance, or you fail and start over.

The controls are as simple as thumbs on a gamepad. Movement across the screen, shooting, sometimes a bomb — you can feel the era of no complications here. The graphics are ordinary but clean. The sounds are crunchy, especially that unpleasant noise when an enemy hits you. The game runs smoothly even on weaker hardware, which in the nineties was the whole point — make it work, no windows, no frills.

Nebula Fighter doesn't want to be anything more than what it is. In the 90s we had dozens of games like this, and that's precisely why some are remembered and others forgotten. This one lands somewhere in the middle — decent fun for a boring late afternoon, but not worth obsessing over. The graphics aged standardly, the mechanics are familiar now and they were then, it's simply an exact copy of a hundred other games.
