I remember the moment when my friend showed me a disk labeled "FRUA" and said: "This is basically Gold Box, but you make the whole thing yourself." I was fourteen and it sounded like a scam. It wasn't a scam.

Forgotten Realms: Unlimited Adventures from 1993 is an adventure editor built on the Gold Box engine by SSI — the system that powered Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, and other icons of the late eighties and early nineties. MicroMagic took that engine, wrapped it in a toolkit, and sold players the ability to build their own RPG campaigns using AD&D 2nd Edition rules set in the Forgotten Realms. The game does include its own scenario, Heirs to Skull Crag, but that's just a sample. The main product is the editor itself.

Playing the original scenario looks exactly like Gold Box — turns on an overview map, tactical combat in isometric view, managing a party of up to six characters, mountains of statistics. Anyone who knows those games will sit down and go to town. Anyone new to them faces a pretty steep learning curve, because there's no tutorial and AD&D 2E rules don't make exceptions. The editor then adds another layer of complexity: you draw dungeons tile by tile, set up events, dialogue, triggers. For 1993, the system was surprisingly robust, even though some things — like branching stories or complex scripts — required patience and a little bit of magical thinking.

What FRUA brought was community. The FRUA Design internet forum became a place where people shared hundreds of amateur modules — Dragonlance adaptations, original worlds, recreations of classic tabletop adventures. Part of that community was still active well into the 2000s, which is no small feat for an editor from the nineties. The game itself aged technically the same way the rest of the Gold Box series did: the interface is stark and keyboard-heavy, the graphics match the release year, and without a nostalgic approach to AD&D there's not much reason to push through. But if you have that approach, this is almost an infinite repository of content.

Today FRUA appeals mainly to two types of people. First are Gold Box veterans who want to see what fans have dreamed up over thirty years — and it's worth it, because some community modules surpass the bundled scenario in quality. Second are people who want to build their own dungeon using rules they know from tabletop, and don't mind that the tool comes from an era when results were saved to a floppy disk. It runs fine in a browser via DOSBox, and the controls become familiar quickly. Just make sure to grab a few community scenarios along with it — Heirs to Skull Crag is functional, but far from the best the engine can do.
