Dinosaurs for Hire for the Sega Mega Drive (1993) is a run-and-gun action game whose premise is audible in the title alone: dinosaurs, available for hire. It draws on an American comic book about a crew of talking mercenary dinosaurs solving present-day problems with overwhelming firepower — and the game carries that exaggeration to the screen without softening a single frame.

Mechanically this is a classic march to the right with a weapon in claw: side view, hordes of enemies, bigger guns to collect and bosses waiting at the end of each stage. The Mega Drive was the natural home for this kind of action; the run-and-gun genre thrived on the console through the early nineties, and its audience prized exactly this directness.

The title's charm is its tone. Where other games took their action heroes seriously, here a tyrannosaurus in sunglasses sprays bullets while delivering one-liners straight out of an action movie. The nineties had a soft spot for this brand of confident excess, and Dinosaurs for Hire is a purebred specimen of it.

Both the comic and the game remained cult items rather than hits, which today makes the cartridge a collector's curiosity in the Mega Drive library — a game few people know, yet one that captures its moment precisely.
