The Guild of Thieves

I remember sitting at a friend's place back in '88, watching text lines disappear on the monitor after typing GO NORTH. No picture, no sound — just letters on a black screen, and yet we both sat there completely glued to it. The Guild of Thieves from Rainbird captured exactly that magic.

It's a text adventure from 1987 by Magnetic Scrolls, one of those studios that took the genre seriously back then. You play as a thief — a rookie in the guild — and your job is to prove your worth where it matters most: through thievery. The world is set in an English countryside with a castle, a tavern, a harbor, and forests. Nothing futuristic, nothing grand fantasy. Just England, where you wouldn't exactly want to run into the local guard.

The controls are classic text interface — a parser. You type commands like TAKE COIN or OPEN DOOR and the game responds. Magnetic Scrolls had an above-average parser for its time, understanding complex sentences and not punishing you with stupid error messages as often as the competition. Still, the old rule applies: get stuck on one item's logic and lose an hour was completely normal in 1987 and remains normal today. Some puzzles are fair, others fall into that category where you won't solve them with common sense alone without a guide.

What made this game exceptional then and what you'll appreciate now are the descriptions. Every location, every object — it's not just functional text, there's atmosphere. The authors wrote carefully and it showed. Without a single image, you felt the dampness of the cellar or the wind at the harbor. The DOS version had no graphics at all, other platforms did — but the textual soul of the game stands firmly on its own.

Today it's an experience for the patient player who loves an archaeological approach to gaming. If text adventures don't interest you as a genre or if you hate games that don't hold your hand, The Guild of Thieves won't win you over. But if you want to see how interactive worlds were written in an era when every byte was precious and every word had to carry weight — this is a good example.
