Alley Cat, released by IBM through Synapse Software in 1984, is a charming and surprisingly inventive arcade game from the earliest days of PC gaming. You play a scruffy alley cat with romance and mischief on his mind, and the goal is to woo a white cat sitting in a window across the yard. First, though, you have to survive the alley itself.

The clever twist is that the game is really a collection of interconnected mini-scenarios. You start in the yard, leaping between flying garbage-can lids and climbing a clothesline to reach an open window, dodging a fierce dog along the way. Once inside a window, the game shifts to entirely different rooms: swiping fish from a bowl while avoiding the goldfish, chasing mice through a room, sneaking past a broom-wielding homeowner, or nibbling cheese while dodging traps. Clear enough of these to earn your way to the female cat.

For a 1984 CGA title it packed remarkable variety and personality, with a genuine sense of humour and a cat that actually behaved like a cat. The controls are dated and the difficulty can be punishing, but its inventiveness and charm made it a memorable early classic. It stands out as proof that even the primitive four-colour PC could deliver a game with real character.
