Over Tough Guy

Deze recensie is nog niet vertaald — we tonen het origineel (English).

Back in 1994, I heard all sorts of things coming through my Sound Blaster speakers — but Taiwanese fighting games from manufacturers whose names you'd read once and forget formed their own category. Panda Entertainment Technology wasn't Capcom or Midway. And it showed.

Tough Guy is a 2D fighting game for MS-DOS that doesn't really try to hide its inspiration. Street Fighter II was pulling the entire genre forward on PC back then, and everyone wanted a slice of that pie. You get a choice between several modes — classic one-on-one battles, two-player versus, and tournament mode. The foundation is there and structurally the game looks acceptable enough.

Gameplay is exactly where you'd expect a mid-tier clone to land. Movement works, attacks respond, special moves exist — but all with that slight clunkiness that keeps you from feeling like you're controlling a character, more like you're convincing them to do what you want. Enemy AI isn't brutal, but it's not particularly clever either. The intro screens and presentation are surprisingly solid — clearly part of the budget went there. The music unfortunately isn't a strong point, and that's a noticeable handicap in a fighter where rhythm underscores every hit.

What did Tough Guy bring to the table? Honestly — availability. It didn't show up much on Western shelves, but in an era when not everyone could get their hands on original Capcom titles and pirated copies were being passed around on floppies, it filled the role of a cheap alternative. Today it's more of a document showing what the lower end of the genre looked like when PC fighting games were still finding their footing. It doesn't age well or poorly — it just stands still while the world moved on.

These days, Tough Guy is for those who want the complete picture of the DOS-era fighting game scene — not just Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter, but the games that sat in the shadows and didn't really excite anyone. As a gaming artifact, it has value. As entertainment for a long evening? Unlikely. But twenty minutes in your browser to confirm why nobody remembers this one fondly — that's time well spent.
