Shooting from three-quarters court with painful keyboard mashing. Omni-Play Basketball from 1990 is that distant relative of sports sims from back then — it sits somewhere between arcade fun and an attempt at something more realistic, but ultimately leans more toward the arcade side of things.

It's a basketball simulator on MS-DOS where you play through matches in one-player versus computer or head-to-head mode. The goal is straightforward — score more points than your opponent. The game puts you in control of a team, managing individual positions and making defensive and offensive decisions. For the time, it's a reasonably solid attempt.

Gameplay happens through menus with choices and text branches — you're not on the court in real time, but rather directing actions more abstractly. When you shoot, you get a close-up screen with a crosshair or slider you need to hit. The system is confusing and pretty sluggish. I'd play this game to rack up a few points and move forward in the season, not because it's fun as active entertainment. The graphics are dry, the sound minimal.

What makes Omni-Play Basketball interesting today is really the documentary aspect — you get to see how they tackled sports sims in the nineties when computers were still weak and programmers couldn't do everything. The game isn't bad, just… empty. It lacks drive, wit, something that would pull you back.
