Over Doom Registered v1.1

Deze recensie is nog niet vertaald — we tonen het origineel (English).

When I first launched Doom, I had no idea I was standing at the threshold of something that would change the gaming industry. Today I know those were just the first five minutes of a game that was itself a revolution — and the Registered version 1.1 is the finest form of the original.

You're a soldier on Phobos, a moon of Mars, where a research station has exploded into hell. Stock sci-fi scenarios were too boring for id Software, so they grabbed demons and hellish portals instead. The objective is as simple as a bullet: wade through obstacles, shoot anything that moves, and try to survive. Doom isn't a story — it's an adrenaline geyser wrapped in eight minutes of looping music and weapon sounds whistling past your ears.

Playing it is pure, like water. Keyboard, mouse, press buttons, demon models crumble into pixels. The engine runs smoothly even on a 386, rendering space without losing pace. The perspectival trick is genius — Doom isn't 3D in today's sense, it's a 2.5D illusion that genuinely works. Weapons have weight. Vistas have architecture. Demons have behavior. Nothing is just decoration.

What did Doom do that mattered? It destroyed the notion that shooters without intellectual obligations can't be artistically solid. It showed that atmosphere, design, and mechanics can be built without a screenwriter. Version 1.1 means the bugs are gone, workers stuck in walls are history, and the game just runs. The shareware version became a cultural icon and Registered added another eight levels with a darker mood.

Today Doom is old, but it isn't worn out. It plays in a browser, downloads are single-digit megabytes, and difficulty is adjustable. There's one disappointment: you have to wrangle stereo sound on a DOS box to get the game playing the way it deserves. But once you pull it off, you hear a demon in your ear hunting you from the right direction, and I can imagine how that felt in 1993 on the slowest rigs. Simply excellent.

Cheats en codes voor Doom Registered v1.1

Cheats onthullen (spoiler)

Doom cheats are typed straight into the running game — there is no console and no menu to open. You simply type the code on the keyboard while running through a level, and a confirmation message appears at the top of the screen after the last letter. If you are playing in the browser, click inside the game window first so the keyboard talks to the game and not to the page. Noclip here is IDSPISPOPD, because this is the first-generation Doom engine. It is also the early registered release, version 1.1: IDFA, IDCLEV and IDMYPOS only arrived in later builds, so they are deliberately missing from the table — if they do nothing, it is the version and not your typing.

CodeEffect
IDDQDGod mode — neither monsters nor the environment can take your health
IDKFAAll weapons, full ammo, armour and every key in the level
IDSPISPOPDWalk through walls (noclip) — works only in Doom 1 and Ultimate Doom
IDBEHOLD + letterPower-ups: S = berserk strength, I = partial invisibility, V = invulnerability, A = full area map, L = light amplification visor, R = radiation suit
IDDTReveals the automap; typed twice it also shows monsters and items (only works with the automap open)
IDMUS##Plays the music track from a chosen level (e.g. IDMUS05)
IDCHOPPERSGrants the chainsaw plus temporary invulnerability, with the message “Doesn’t suck – GM”

Doom is one of the rare games whose cheats became common knowledge — plenty of people who never played it still know IDDQD. Doom cheats are not hidden in a menu, they are simply key sequences — which is why you can trigger one by accident. They are also worth saving for a second playthrough: IDDQD turns Doom into a shooting gallery and switches off the rule the whole game is built on, namely managing ammo and health.
