Turma da Mônica em: O Resgate

Turma da Mônica em: O Resgate is a Brazilian curiosity with few parallels in console history: an official reskin of the Master System gem Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, released in 1993 by Tec Toy, Sega's Brazilian distributor, with the cast swapped for characters from Mauricio de Sousa's Monica's Gang comics. Mônica sets out to rescue her friends, kidnapped by the villain Capitão Feio.

The underlying game is untouched, which is excellent news: it is an exploratory platformer with RPG touches in which the world gradually opens up through the heroine's transformations. Instead of a sword Mônica swings her plush rabbit Sansão, and Wonder Boy's animal forms became her friends — Chico Bento as the lizard, Bidu as the mouse, Cebolinha as the piranha, Magali as the lion and Anjinho as the hawk, with Cascão manning the item shop.

In Brazil the cartridge ranks among the most beloved Master System titles of all time: familiar comic-book faces grafted onto one of the finest action-adventures of the 8-bit era simply could not fail. The game was released only in Brazil and only in Portuguese; no other version ever existed.

If you loved Wonder Boy III, this is a charming excuse to play it again through different eyes — and you can play it right in your browser on OldGame.cz.
