Pilgrim Quest

There are games I've never heard of, and then there are games I've never heard of that kept me glued to the monitor for an hour straight. Pilgrim Quest from 1991 falls into the latter category.

Decision Development Corp. created a strategy game set during the colonization of the New World. The premise is straightforward: board a ship, cross the Atlantic, survive, and prosper. Genre-wise, it's a strategy with a strong exploration flavor — somewhere between Discovery of the Americas, Seven Cities of Gold, and Colonization, as someone once aptly put it. And that combination makes sense. Each of those titles was solid in its own right, so the resulting hybrid had plenty to build on.

Gameplay revolves around resource management, route decisions, and gradually penetrating unknown territory. For 1991 standards, the controls are clear, the menus logical, and the game doesn't throw you into the deep end without a life raft. That was a comfort you couldn't always count on with similar titles back then. The pace is deliberate, analytical — no reflexes needed, just planning and patience.

What sets Pilgrim Quest apart from direct competition is how it blends different gameplay layers. It's not just trading or just exploring — you have to weigh both simultaneously, under conditions that constantly force you to reassess. The game doesn't look away when you make a wrong call. It has aged decently: the graphics are minimalist but functional, and the mechanics don't rely on anything that would feel clunky today. The real shame is it flew under the radar in 1991 with virtually no promotion.

Today it'll appeal mainly to those who love strategy with an exploration component and don't mind a game that doesn't trumpet every system upfront. It takes some patience to get into. But games like that tend to keep you hooked for much longer than a week.
