Om Knoxblock

Denne anmeldelse er endnu ikke oversat — vi viser originalen (English).

You couldn't avoid blocks in eighties computers — and Knoxblock is proof that even in 1986 programmers couldn't keep their hands off them. I took it as a challenge to find it in the archives and run it on a 486.

It's a logic puzzle where colored blocks cascade down the playing field and your task is simple: get the same colors next to each other so they disappear. Vertical and horizontal rows clear as soon as you have enough of them together. It's actually a blood relative of Tetris, just without the rush and time pressure. The game runs at a pace you set — and that makes it calmer than competing games of the same period.

Controls are primitive. Cursor keys for moving selection, Enter to confirm. Graphics — squares on a black background, each in its own color. No tricks, no animation, nothing. Sound? A simple beep when something disappears. Nothing big happens, but that simplicity is actually nice — there's nothing to figure out, just play.

Knoxblock doesn't stand out in gaming history — it had no ambition to be anything more than a worthy piece of logic entertainment for the office and leisure time. And you can see it. It's not about genius, but about concentration and that allure where "one more game" stretches into a quarter hour. In the nineties these kinds of things would be played on office computers during lunch breaks.

Today it suits those who enjoy retro logic puzzles with the emptiness and clear rules without bothering jokes and story. It's not historically particularly interesting or especially polished, but it works — and that purity and clarity is its own magic.
