4D Prince of Persia er ikke et officielt Broderbund-produkt, men en modificeret version af Jordan Mechners klassiske Prince of Persia, bygget på den oprindelige motor fra 1989/1990 og cirkuleret i midten af 90'erne. Den bevarer de fejrede fundamentale elementer: den flydende, rotoskoperede animation, den bevidst momentumbaserede bevægelse, de dødelige gulvpigge, knusende porte, vagtkampe og det evigt tilstedeværende tresindstyveminutter-ur. Det, den ændrer, er niveaudesignet og tilbyder et frisk sæt palaskorridorer at navigere for spillere, der allerede havde udtømt originalens fangehulker.
