Moptown Parade

When you start Moptown Parade, you're in for something between an educational toy and the strange dream of an eighties computer designer. A game with no clear author wandered into PC history as a crumb nobody remembers, yet it's still there.

There's no friendly story or dramatic plot here. You have fairly simple controls — you move around the screen, collect some objects, avoid obstacles. The expedition is what was possible in 1984 — simple colored shapes on a black background, a sound more like acoustic accompaniment than actual music. Playing is repetitive, almost hypnotic. It's not about skill or strategy, more about getting through levels and enduring until something works out.

What's interesting is that such games were part of computer life back then like anything else. Nobody expected them to be brilliant. They were playable programs that entertained for a while — and Moptown Parade is honest in that regard. It has no ambition to be anything more. But today it's aged noticeably — without story, without motivation, without anything that would pull you back. It's a historical curiosity, not an experience that would stick with you.

If you like early home computer creations and are interested in what entertainment looked like for eight-bit (later sixteen-bit) processors, take a look. Emulators and archives have it saved. But don't expect to remember it the same way you remember legendary pieces. It's more of an imprint of the era that someone decided to preserve out of nostalgia.
