Capcom's 1998 arcade release closes out the Alpha branch of Street Fighter, a prequel line to the second game, and it stands as one of the deepest fighters ever built on the CPS-2 board. Its signature idea is the ism system: before the match you pick a style that changes the rules your character plays by. One provides the familiar layered super combo structure, another grants a single devastating super with no gauge levels, and a third leans on custom combos and aggressive self-directed pressure. That choice is not cosmetic. It reshapes pacing and strategy so thoroughly that the same character feels like three different tools, which is a large part of why tournament players still return to the game. The roster is enormous for its era and pulls faces from across the series' history. Presentation represents the peak of Capcom's hand-drawn era: large animated sprites over dense backgrounds, produced at a point when the studio's pixel work was so accomplished that the move to polygons felt like a step backwards for years afterwards. The soundtrack and voice work push the tempo along and are inseparable from the atmosphere. This is a demanding game that rewards knowledge of matchups and punishes hesitation, so newcomers should expect a steep introduction, though the standard six-button layout means anyone who has played any Street Fighter will find their footing.
