In vacanza con Sylvia

An Italian adventure that whisks you away to Tuscany — and it quickly becomes clear this won't be your average vacation. In vacanza con Sylvia is a point-and-click spy mystery from the mid-nineties, and exactly who created it or when remains something of a mystery the Italian scene kept close to its chest, but the game exists and it works.

You travel with a mysterious woman named Sylvia through picturesque countryside, collecting items, talking to characters, and always sensing something unfolding behind the scenes. Stylistically it echoes classic Sierra or LucasArts point-and-clicks, just without their budgets — you can see it in the graphics, animations, everything. The visuals are flat, characters cut without gradients, rooms feel crammed into bitmaps. But that primitive look creates a certain atmosphere — it's not pretty, it's eerie.

You play with a static camera, using your mouse to select actions from the menu at the bottom. Nothing complex — go there, take that, say something. The game expects you to read everything the characters tell you. The logic tends to be bluntly straightforward: want to convince someone? Find the evidence. Item hunting isn't tedious, but you'll hit points where you're stuck, and then all you can do is click everything on screen. The game isn't particularly challenging, more restrained and unhurried.

This is exactly the kind of forgotten Italian point-and-click from the second half of the nineties — it exists, it was playable, someone made it with genuine intent, but you know nothing about it because it never reached the media you read. While Sierra stared into the abyss and LucasArts made Grim Fandango, someone in Italy thought: we'll make our own. The result is flawed, but honest.

You play it through an emulator via oldgames or similar archives. The graphics are rough on the eyes, character movement is stiff, dialogue drags, but if you're curious how an average Italian indie developer imagined their adventure back when point-and-clicks were dying, it's a fascinating archive piece. Not a gem, but not junk either — just forgotten Mediterranean.
