Om CGA Cave

Denne anmeldelsen er ikke oversatt ennå — vi viser originalen (English).

Four colors. That's your entire world. Cyan, magenta, white, and black — the palette that gave a generation of kids migraines and somehow still felt magical. CGA Cave doesn't apologize for this. It wears it like a badge, because that's exactly the point.

Released in 2014 but dressed like it crawled out of 1982, CGA Cave is a small DOS game built around a single obsession: recreating the look and feel of early PC graphics with almost surgical accuracy. You navigate procedurally generated tunnels, pushing deeper into the cave for as long as you can manage. No story, no cutscenes, no inventory screen with seventeen different potion types. Just you, the cave, and the question of how far down you can get before it swallows you whole.

The mechanics are stripped to the bone in a way that feels deliberate rather than lazy. Movement is simple, the challenge comes from reading the terrain and reacting fast enough. Because the caves are generated fresh each run, there's no memorizing your way through — you either adapt or you start over. It's the kind of loop that doesn't need explaining. You understand it in thirty seconds and spend the next twenty minutes trying to beat your last run.

What makes CGA Cave interesting isn't the gameplay itself, which is honest but thin. It's the commitment to the bit. This isn't a game that slaps a CGA filter on modern assets and calls it retro. The whole thing behaves like it was actually compiled on a machine that cost more than a car and ran slower than a ceiling fan. Whether that reads as charming or tedious depends entirely on your tolerance for the aesthetic. If you grew up squinting at that cyan-and-magenta glow, there's something weirdly comforting here. If you didn't, it might just look like a broken screen.

It hasn't aged badly because it never pretended to be more than it is. Small, focused, genuinely weird in that hobbyist-project way — the kind of thing someone built because they wanted to see if they could, then released it quietly with no fanfare. That restraint is refreshing compared to the ironic-retro games that shout about their influences from the rooftop. CGA Cave just exists. It doesn't need your approval.

Today it runs fine in the browser, which means the barrier to trying it is exactly zero. Give it ten minutes if you have any fondness for early PC aesthetics or just want something that doesn't waste your time explaining itself. It won't change your life. It might, however, remind you why four colors were once enough.
