Deep Space Drifter

Year 1990, the monitor glows in the darkness of the room, and I'm sitting at the keyboard trying to figure out how to survive in a broken ship somewhere on the edge of the galaxy. Deep Space Drifter wasn't a game everyone talked about, but it belonged to those text adventures that could absorb you through sheer power of imagination — and a bit of patience.

It's a text-based sci-fi adventure for MS-DOS by Michael J. Roberts and Steve McAdams. Released in 1990, it places the game during a time when parser adventures were slowly giving way to graphical point-and-click titles, but the old school wasn't surrendering yet. You find yourself in the role of a space castaway — the ship is damaged, the situation critical, and your only hope is a nearby orbital station around the nearest planet, where someone is still picking up distress signals. Classic survival stuff, like a life raft in the void.

Control works through a text parser — you type commands like LOOK, TAKE, GO NORTH and the game responds with a description of the situation. Nothing exceptional for the time, but it depends on the quality of the parser and the vocabulary the authors programmed in. Deep Space Drifter wasn't top-tier in a technical sense; more of a solid fan-made piece with the atmosphere of a cheap sci-fi novel from a paper clearance bin. The writing isn't a literary masterpiece, but the space station environment and the sense of loneliness work.

What I remember best is that opening — a hologram of a tired woman, the room trembling behind her, the connection breaking up. A simple dramatic trick, but effective in text form. The game knew how to build tension on a budget, which was actually the foundation of the entire genre back then. It aged averagely — the parser can be unfriendly at times, the logic of some puzzles requires what we'd now call "period-appropriate tolerance," and without a walkthrough you'll get stuck in places where you have no idea why.

Today I'd recommend it mainly to people who love text adventures as a genre and want to explore even the less famous corners of it. It's not Zork or Hitchhiker's Guide, but it has its charm — this game won't come and pet you on the head, it wants you to think. You can play it in a browser through DOSBox or a text interpreter in an afternoon, and if you don't mind reading more than clicking, it's worth your time.
