You've got one rocket, dozens of enemies, and roughly three seconds to think. Rocket from 1993 isn't a game that lets you catch your breath.
It's a hybrid between a shooter and tactical strategy. You pilot a single rocket on screen and try to destroy as many enemy ships as possible before they destroy you. The game happens in real time — there's no pause, there's no mercy. It's not just about reflexes, but about where on screen you aim, what route you choose, and how you react when the next waves arrive. Sounds simple, but the further you push, the more aggressively and cleverly they attack you.
The controls are minimalist and precise — movement, shooting, and that's basically it. The rocket behaves predictably, has inertia that you need to understand so you don't scratch your head wondering why your gun is on the opposite side of the screen from where you wanted it. The graphics are spartan, those pixelated silhouettes on a dark background, but given how fast things happen, it feels like there wasn't much more room or time anyway. The sound is functional rather than captivating — beeps, buzzes, classic era stuff.
Rocket is the kind of game that gets you with competition. It's not about story or progressing through some narrative — it's about achieving a higher score than yesterday. Each run lasts about ten to twenty minutes, which is the perfect length to tell yourself: one more round. It's old-school design in its purest form — simple rules, endless refinement.
Today you'll find it easily in an emulator. If you're a fan of arcade shooters where it's all about clean reflexes and split-second decision-making, or if you want to go back to a time when a game was just a game with no story and no excuses, Rocket will do its job.
