A trivia game about Star Trek from 1988 on DOS — nothing more, nothing less. If you watched the series in the eighties and wanted to test how well you knew the details from all the series, this is where it was. Questions, answers, score. A simple concept that doesn't have to be bad.
Trek Trivia is exactly what the name promises. You pick answers to questions about Star Trek — characters, episodes, technology, plots. The goal is classic: rack up points for correct answers. There's no story, no mission, just a game of knowledge. If you liked it, you had fun. Everyone else probably quit after five minutes.
Graphics are DOS standard: text environment with a simple color palette. Nothing flashy, nothing bold. Controls are straightforward — cursor movement, answer selection, confirmation. What's missing is the dynamism a good trivia game should offer. Questions are just on the screen, you decide and move on. The game gives you no reason to come back.
In the nineties it made sense. Star Trek fans were loyal and the game served as a test of their devotion. Today that content is everywhere — Wikipedia, forums, YouTube. A trivia game on its own isn't interesting without ambition, without humor, without something that would lift it above bare trivia.
You can play Trek Trivia, but more for historical reasons — to realize how educational and entertaining games were made at the beginning of personal computers. It's not bad, but there's no reason why you should miss it. If you know Star Trek thoroughly and want some retro entertainment without pretense, give it a try. Everyone else will probably find something better thought out.
