When a Game Boy Advance game produced for an animated film about a shark landed in retail packaging, I knew exactly what to expect: a shallow cash-in on a familiar brand. What surprised me was how little else surprised me.

SharkTale is a straightforward action platformer set underwater in DreamWorks film fashion. You play as the main shark and trudge through ocean levels, collect trinkets, and push enemies into holes. Nothing clever, nothing that carries itself—just the standard formula that worked on these handhelds a thousand times before.

The controls are as direct as a brick. Run, jump, attack. On GBA it fits, because handheld platformers were never about precision. The problem isn't how the game plays, but that it plays without any real sense of purpose. Levels ooze along like water, the graphics are safe and dull, and the music squeaks out a few bars before your brain naturally shuts it out in self-defense. It's not bad—it's bored.

Four years after the first Shark Tale's release, the character's media potential had been fully squeezed. The game presents itself as an official expansion of the world, but all you feel is obligation—fulfill the contractual duty to the film studio and get something shelf-worthy that'll sell on the name alone. This isn't a creative venture; it's cash on tape.

Today I'd play it if I'd carelessly diving into GBA games and stumbled into something with an ocean theme. It's a safe place for a while if I'm not expecting artistic merit or design that'll surprise me. But even without those demands—when I'm in a looser mindset and just want to drag a figure across the screen without expectations or ambition—I'm missing that one element that would make this unforgettable. This game leaves no mark.
