Atlantis III: The New World

Atlantis III: The New World, released in 2001 by the French studio Cryo Interactive, is the third chapter of a loose adventure series famous for blending mythology, mysticism and lavish scenery. In the 1990s Cryo was a byword for visually opulent adventures, and that signature carries into this instalment.

The series never relied on strict narrative continuity. Its entries are bound by spirit rather than plot: journeys through ancient civilisations, ancestral secrets, and an atmosphere that always outranks action. Played from a third-person perspective, the game keeps a contemplative pace built on exploration and puzzles.

The French adventure school had an identity of its own, distinct from the American tradition of LucasArts and Sierra — less comedy, more visual poetry, and a willingness to let stories drift like dreams. Cryo was its most prolific workshop, and its games were recognisable at a glance.

The genre was in a difficult moment by 2001. Classic adventures were falling from favour and publishers were losing faith, which gives titles from this era a particular melancholy: they are the genre's last grand expeditions before its long sleep.
