Om Marble Cooking

Denne anmeldelse er endnu ikke oversat — vi viser originalen (English).

Marbles are baked in an oven and the pumpkin woman counts how many she can manage. Marble Cooking comes from an era when educational games were afraid to be subtle — if a kid had to learn something, at least let them look at something colorful. This 1994 DOS thing works exactly like that.

Marble Cooking – screenshot 1

It's a puzzle where you arrange colored marbles into the right combinations. The goal is simple: arrange blocks and marbles according to given rules, usually so that colors match or they line up in a certain order. The game takes its time before it pulls you in — it's not an adrenaline rush, more like slow thinking about how things fit together.

The controls are intuitive, mouse and keyboard do the job. You move the marbles, arrange them, wait for feedback. The graphics are primitive even by nineties standards — simple shapes, flat colors, the sound is more of a presence than an experience. It lacks the wit or personality that would make it not just functional, but actually fun. You play it without emotion, more like completing a task.

Marble Cooking isn't a game you'd remember for something revolutionary. It didn't carve out a place in history because it was exceptionally hard or beautiful. But it represents a certain time — when educational game makers were trying to grab a piece of the PC screen next to Dooms and Lemmings. It fell between the cracks. I don't mean it as criticism, just… that's how it is.

If you're in the mood for a calm, straightforward puzzle without major stakes, you can fire it up in an emulator or through DOSBox. It's not bad, it's not good — it's like watching single-digit numbers being added on a small green monitor. Sometimes that's exactly what you need.
