Om spillet

Denne anmeldelse er endnu ikke oversat — vi viser originalen (English).

1988, five o'clock in the afternoon, Mom calling me to dinner, and I've barely cleared the fourth room out of forty. Gauntlet was a phenomenon in arcades — and when the PC version showed up at home, it was clear I'd be late to the kitchen.

Atari's Gauntlet is a top-down dungeon action game that borrowed arcade DNA and transplanted it to home computers. Four characters with distinct abilities — Warrior, Elf, Wizard, Valkyrie — navigate labyrinths full of monsters, collect keys, hunt for exits, and try to survive. Don't bother looking for a story here; that would be a waste of time. Gauntlet is about movement, reflexes, and decision-making under pressure.

Controls are straightforward — movement, shooting. Except that apparent simplicity masks a genuinely devious system. Your health drains constantly, enemies or not, so every second counts. Food heals, but enemies love to destroy it before you can grab it. Monster generators pump out new waves as long as you leave them standing. Anyone who didn't know that learned it the hard way — usually too late. The PC port suffered from what most arcade conversions suffered: weak sound, speed dependent on your CPU, and without a second player, some of the magic faded. But the core worked.

What Gauntlet brought was legitimately new back then. Four-player co-op in one space, relentless pressure, no lives as a safety net — just your score and dwindling energy. That was pretty bold for 1988. Today, that arcade brutality hasn't aged badly; it just owns what it always was: a game designed to vacuum up coins, translated into a space where coins don't matter. Individual map lengths are short, enemy variety limited. Anyone expecting the depth of a modern dungeon crawler will be disappointed. Anyone expecting pure action with no apologies gets exactly that.

In your browser today, Gauntlet works for anyone who wants twenty minutes of uncomplicated hack-and-slash and a little nostalgic sting. And for those who want to remember how much one bad decision matters when your health is ticking like a time bomb.
