Bolo Ball

You play this game against yourself and hope you're doing it right. Bolo Ball is a minimalist puzzle from 1992 where you control a tiny ball across a playing field and rack up points by touching squares of matching colors. Nothing more, nothing less.

The logic is simple: colored squares appear on screen, you navigate using the keyboard or mouse, and try to guide the ball to a square of the correct color. Each successful touch adds points, the wrong color knocks you down. The playing field gradually fills up and time is limited. It's fast, tactile, devoid of story or atmosphere — pure mechanics.

Unlike the later puzzle game hits like Tetris or Puyo Puyo, elegance is missing here. Bolo Ball feels like an exercise, not a game. You're controlling the ball smoothly one moment, then a key responds a heartbeat late and everything falls apart. You have to concentrate, but no amount of nerve will give you a sense of progression or overcoming an obstacle. It's reflexes without end, without understanding why you're even sitting there.

In the nineties there were tons of games like this on MS-DOS — cheap puzzles with no pretense that took up just a few kilobytes. Bolo Ball never burned itself into anyone's memory. It wasn't the kind of game you'd try to boot up again, or recommend to a friend. Its only purpose was to fill space on a disk.

Today it's an artifact with minimal depth. There's nothing wrong with it, but nothing to draw you in beyond a few minutes either. If you're in the mood for a bare-bones, quick reflex minigame with no pretensions, try firing it up in a browser — it's out there somewhere. Otherwise, you're not missing a thing.
