Moorhuhn began life in 1999 not as a commercial product but as a promotional giveaway, commissioned by a whisky brand and built by the German studio Phenomedia. The premise could hardly be simpler: a flock of cartoon chickens flap and strut across a rustic countryside backdrop, and you have a fixed time limit to shoot as many as possible for points. That is the entire game, and it became a genuine phenomenon across Germany and much of Europe.

What made it spread like wildfire was its accessibility. It was free, tiny, and ran on any office PC, which made it the classic time-waster passed around workplaces and schools when nobody was supposed to be playing games at all. Birds nearer the camera are worth fewer points than distant ones, so chasing a high score means aiming for the harder, smaller targets zipping across the horizon. The crosshair swings across a scrolling scene while chickens cluck and tumble in a satisfyingly comic way.

There is no depth here, and none was intended. It is a pure arcade reflex toy, and its charm comes entirely from its cheerful silliness and the competitive itch of beating a friend's tally. The runaway success led to a whole franchise of sequels and spin-offs. Today it stands as a quirky monument to the late-1990s advergame boom, a reminder of when a simple chicken shoot could quietly conquer an entire continent's lunch breaks.
