Jazz Jackrabbit, released by Epic MegaGames in 1994, was the PC's answer to the console mascot platformers that ruled the 16-bit era. While Sonic and Mario dominated the Sega and Nintendo, DOS players finally got their own fast, colourful hero: a green rabbit in a bandana toting a blaster, engaged in an eternal feud with the turtle Devan Shell. The Sonic comparison is apt — the whole game is built around speed, momentum and vividly detailed levels.

What made it special was how well it ran. At a time when smooth scrolling was still a genuine technical achievement on the PC, Jazz zipped along at a slick pace, blasting enemies with a variety of weapons across bright, layered stages full of springs, tubes and secrets. It leaned more on run-and-gun shooting than the pure jumping of its console cousins, giving it a distinct identity, and its cartoon presentation and thumping soundtrack showed off what a well-tuned VGA machine could do.

It stands today as one of the definitive DOS platformers, a reminder that the PC wasn't only about strategy and adventure games. The action can feel a little chaotic and the levels sprawling, but the sheer energy and polish still shine, and Jazz remains one of Epic's most fondly remembered early creations.

Cheats in the first Jazz Jackrabbit are entered while paused. Press P, then Backspace, then type the code blind. Watch out for one thing most lists get wrong: the dd prefix (ddcstrike instead of cstrike) is needed only in version 1.1 — it is not a shareware-versus-registered distinction.

The codes are named after people at Epic and carry a piece of the era’s rivalry — apogee was a dig at the competing label. One closing warning: these codes belong to the first game. Jazz Jackrabbit 2 on Windows uses an entirely different cheat system and nothing in this table works there.
