The screen breaks and nothing fixes it. PhantomScreen is an attempt at something that could be a screensaver or monitor restoration utility, but instead you get chaos without instructions and without purpose.
It's a DOS utility from the early nineties that today is hard to categorize. It seems mainly intended for screen decoration—various effects that play in the background when the computer isn't doing anything. Version 1.2b suggests long development, but which versions we're talking about remains a mystery.
Running the program gives you space for experimentation, nothing more. Effects are basic—flashing, ripples, geometric shapes that distort the image. Controls? Practically nonexistent. You wait and watch what the computer does. There's no menu, no explanation of what each key does. For a modern player it looks more like program failure than feature.
In the nineties such arrangements made sense. Your computer stood idle sometimes (printing, downloading), and to keep the monitor from burning, you'd put something on screen. PhantomScreen was one of thousands of attempts to fill that time without opinion. Plenty of functional screensavers existed—here it's more a technical curiosity.
Today you play it in a DOS emulator as an artifact. It's not a game, not properly even a utility. It's something between, an unsuccessful sketch of something meant to be interesting that ended as a static screen with stuttering effects. But that's exactly why it's worth seeing—a record of an attempt that didn't think it through.
