Zoo Tycoon 2: Extinct Animals is a 2007 expansion for the zoo-building game developed by Blue Fang Games. The add-on rests on a simple and effective idea: alongside the usual animals it offers species that no longer exist, from prehistoric ones to those wiped out in recent centuries.

The base game combined construction with animal husbandry. The player laid out enclosures, paths, and stalls, watched the mood of both visitors and animals, and had to account for the fact that each species needs a different habitat. The expansion does not rework that loop; it extends it into territory with obvious pull for children and adults alike, since a dinosaur in a paddock sells itself.

Building games carrying the Tycoon suffix formed a genre of their own in the early 2000s. They ran on modest hardware, were played entirely with a mouse, applied no time pressure, and worked just as well for an hour as for a whole weekend. Expansions sold well precisely because the player kept an existing zoo and simply received more material to work with.

Worth knowing: as an expansion, this requires the base game installed and does nothing on its own. The catalogue marks it as not playable in the browser, which is consistent for software of this type and vintage.

Extinct species brought a design problem of their own, since animals whose real requirements are barely known still needed rules. The game answered with simplification, giving each species habitat needs and a contentment rating like any other, and left the educational content to the descriptive text attached to each animal.
