Graphics? None. Sound? Just a stupid beep when something happens. Text Views is a game of pure spirit — and I mean that literally. Everything that happens on screen is just a line of words and numbers on a black DOS prompt background. It's not a bug, it's a feature.

It's a text adventure from the category of games that relies on your imagination and reading instead of clicking and drawn graphics. You progress through the game via commands — you type a word, the game responds with more text. A classic of the genre from the era when computers couldn't do much else, so at least they could write well. The demo version from 2013 is an attempt at what such a game could look like today, when retro is trendy and digital nostalgia is marketable.

The game mechanics are basically simple: you read a description of the situation, type what you want to do, and the system produces the next scene. It works, sort of. The idea of playing in pure text form made sense in the eighties when graphics were a luxury. Today, though, it's not nostalgia, it's more of an exercise in patience. You don't see a character, you don't see the world, just words. Sometimes it works — imagination is stronger than a picture. Very often it just frustrates because you don't know what's actually happening, and the logic of commands is exactly as it was in the original games: unforgiving and unpredictable.

Text Views as a concept belongs in a museum of computer culture. Those original text adventures had charm precisely because there was nothing else. Re-releasing them today feels more like a historical artifact than entertainment. The demo version feels like a school project — ambitious, but without the body and soul that the originals had.

Who will try it? Collectors of curiosities and fans of historical games who want to see how far we've come. Or a student interested in how games used to be played. Everyone else will fire it up in a browser for a moment and then go play something with pictures.
