When you grab the joystick and select "Advanced Mission" from the menu, you're in for something between a simulator and an arcade game that knows exactly what it wants — to fly, bank, and shoot. Fighter Bomber from the early nineties is what happens when developers decide the player won't be staring at instruments, but at what's happening beyond the cockpit canopy.
You're a fighter pilot in a plane that looks more like some Western design. You fly over the map in iconic bird's-eye perspective, targets ahead of you like a checklist of duties — buildings, locations, the occasional anti-aircraft defense. There's no half-hour tutorials here explaining waypoints and how to set up pedals. You take off, orient yourself across the landscape, and start bombing or shooting as you see fit. The game assumes you know how to fly, or you'll figure it out quick.
The controls are simple until you realize how much you need to juggle at once — hold altitude, navigate, watch fuel, line up your gun on the target, and keep an eye out so anti-aircraft fire doesn't pin you down. The joystick forces some decisions to be made with both hands, the keyboard handles secondary actions. There's nothing soft about it, nothing indulgent. The game gives you twelve minutes to break a sweat, and then you're done. Crash, and you start over. On DOS hardware, this was precision like nothing else — exact, impatient.
What we remember is exactly that hard simplicity. Strip away the UI clutter and let the player decide — fly or fall. Fighter Bomber wrung everything from that philosophy. The graphics aren't photorealistic, nor does that mean they look drab — there's color applied judiciously, legible and without complaint. Engine sounds and gunfire aren't symphonic, but they do their job.
Today? The game will start to choke, but only if you boot it in some vanilla modern emulator. Better yet — try it in your browser through Dosbox.com, and you'll find the missions aren't unforgettable, but punishing enough to keep you occupied for a while. It's not a simulator that teaches you, but a game that won't coddle you. That's exactly what a forty-something wants.
