When I turned on a computer in the mid-nineties, there was one thing left on the screen that I had available — this game. Not because it was interesting. Quite the opposite.

Solitaire is the simplest implementation of a card game DOS could afford. You know it — seven columns, each starting at different height, a deck of cards in the corner, goal is simple: move all cards to four foundation piles by color in ascending order from ace. Unknown maker, minimal graphics, either no sound or simple chiming. Period.

It's played without frills. You click a card, drag it to a column or foundation. Sometimes you win, often you lose, you always come back. There's no artificial difficulty, no special effects. Just cards, logic and tedious math. Controls are so straightforward that nothing unexpected can happen.

Solitaire from 1985 exists because it was available and boring. Boredom filled free moments, waiting, dead spots at work. It was the digital equivalent of a deck of cards that no one in the office would take from you. When Microsoft shoved its version into Windows later, it was easy to understand how unnecessary it was — a centuries-old card trick nobody needed, but everyone wasted time on.

Today there's nothing to look at. The thing served its purpose at the time, and that was all. Anyone who wants to play solitaire has hundreds of better versions on their phone. This is a pure artifact, more historical note than game. Playing it today means feeling time pass, nothing more.
