When someone said "horror game" in the nineties, they usually meant Resident Evil or King's Quest. Last Half of Darkness took a different path — an old-school point-and-click beacon in the darkness, where you don't even want to turn on the headlights.
It's the third installment in the series, so the logic is simple: you explore gloomy environments, collect items, solve puzzles, and try to make it to the end with your skin intact. Nothing revolutionary on paper. But back then it worked. The atmosphere of everything — from the graphics to the sounds to the fact that you have three minutes for each action — gradually pulls you out of your comfort zone. It's not action, it's not a logic puzzle game. It's simply feeling that pressure, that time, that darkness.
The controls are typical for the era: left mouse button on things you want to examine, right button for inventory. Moving across the screen, loading between rooms — everything slow and theatrical. Combined with a quiet soundtrack and occasional sound effects, it becomes an effective tool. The game forces you to think, but at the same time you're not afraid to look at things multiple times, because the first attempt might not be the right one. That's engaging — not like modern point-and-click games with one "correct" solution per puzzle.
The third installment already had a developed system behind it. It looks simple — boxes, characters, texture — but within such a budget, Last Half of Darkness was pretty ambitious. The series had its fans, who remember it more from hearsay and snippets in computer magazines than from actually playing it.
