The Polish strike from 1991 isn't a parade with banners here, but a chess game about survival. Solidarnosc is a strategic simulation you can play as a worker or as the regime — and this concept was still uncommon for games back then.

It's a computer representation of real events from the seventies and eighties — clashes between the Solidarność labor movement and the Polish communist regime. The game gives you tools to manipulate public opinion, organize protests, fund activities, and manage repression. On one side you stand with the goal of achieving freedom, on the other side awaits a brutal state apparatus. It's turn by turn, where one wrong move means arrest or suppression of the movement.

Graphically it's spartan — text menus, simple tables, numbers. No animations, no sounds to pump your adrenaline. Control is click-based and you're trying to type commands into the command line, which feels unusual today, but back then it was standard. Mechanically it plays like a board game — you gather money, decide whether to invest in education or weapons, and then wait for results. It's not an adrenaline rush, more like therapy for your nerves.

Solidarnosc wasn't a hit on the level of SimCity or Civilization, but it had something original — political humility. It simulates a reality its creators lived through themselves. In the nineties, such educational strategies were rare. The game doesn't trivialize, doesn't enchant. When you fall, you fall. When the regime wins, you feel it.

Today you'll play it in a browser more out of curiosity about history than for pure entertainment. But this courage — dedicating a game to real things, political struggle, without cinematic polish — that's what's most interesting about it. The game feels serious, and that's rare.
