Mice Men

When I first launched Mice Men, I expected a puzzle game or an adventure. Instead, I was greeted with an hour of confusion and struggling to understand what the creators were actually thinking. No manual, no intro sequence, nothing to tell me what I was supposed to be trying to do.

It's an action game where you navigate a screen full of obstacles and traps, usually with some kind of mouse as the main character. The environments are simple, even rudimentary — the kind of thing a 386 could handle without breaking a sweat. Visually, it looks like someone tried to mimic the style of early games with simple graphics and didn't put much work into it.

The controls are straightforward, but unpleasant. Movement responds harshly, jumps are unpredictable, and timing is brutally unforgiving. You're not sure if it's a design flaw or intentional — maybe the challenge was supposed to be harder, but it just ended up frustrating. The worst part is that you don't even know why failure hurts so much. Where's the joy in learning to control the game?

Mice Men is one of those curious DOS titles that fell into obscurity pretty deservedly. There's nothing in it you'd remember with gratitude — no catchy tune, no beautiful scene, no moment where you think "wow, that's genius". It's just a game that exists to drain your energy with irritation and disappointment.

These days you'd only look at it out of historical curiosity, to understand how chaotically things were sometimes made back then. You'll find it in an archive of old games, click on it, play for five minutes, and then wonder why you wasted your time. But it's interesting material for talking about what the industry looked like twenty-eight years ago — wild, unorganized, and full of experiments that didn't quite land.
