Diamond Ball 3

Year 1992, four megabytes of RAM, a boot diskette, and a dozen shareware games downloaded from somewhere on the BBS. Diamond Ball 3 was exactly the kind of game you'd fire up between homework assignments and then wonder why it was already midnight.

This is a logic arcade from H. Wilhelm's workshop, built on a simple principle: you control a ball bouncing up and down, move it left and right, and try to clear a maze made of colored bricks. The catch? The ball only breaks bricks that match its own color. Special bricks change color. Once everything that needs to disappear is gone, diamonds appear — and that's the goal.

The mechanics are crystal clear within thirty seconds. Yet the game has decent depth in planning the sequence of your moves, because you need to chain color changes thoughtfully. Controls are straightforward, no complicated key combinations, no manual needed. Where the game stumbles a bit is pacing — the ball's bounce is deterministic, but it takes a moment to figure out when and where to move. A beginner flails around chaotically; an experienced player waits and thinks ahead.

Diamond Ball 3 isn't a big title. It didn't come in a box with a colorful manual, Byte and Score didn't write about it. It's shareware, honestly made by one author, with no orchestral soundtrack or rendered cutscenes. And that's precisely why it survived — it was free, ran on anything with DOS, and you could play it immediately. The graphics are modest, the PC speaker sounds are tolerable, but the logical foundation is solid. What's aged most is the visual austerity, which you'll only forgive if you have natural respect for the shareware era.

Today it makes sense to try it in a browser via DOSBox emulators, if you enjoy compact logic games without modern tutorial hand-holding. It takes no more than an hour to figure out if it clicks for you. Nostalgists from the shareware era will recognize it instantly. Everyone else will find a functional mechanic — and might remember how little it took back then for a game to work.
